1987 Jeep Cherokee XJ Vehicle Configuration

Jeep brand subsidiary of the auto company Chrysler is the oldest manufacturer of all-terrain vehicles of its kind. The 1987 Jeep Cherokee came standard with an AMC 150-cubic-inch inline, four-cylinder engine that put out 117 horsepower. The 2.5-liter engine produced 135 foot-pounds of torque and was a valve-body injection (TBI) configuration. An updated Cherokee is available with an AMC 242-cubic-inch, 4.0-liter, inline-six engine and included four-wheel drive. It produced 173 horsepower and 220 foot-pounds of torque.

The 1987 Jeep Cherokee offered a five-speed manual transmission and two-wheel drive AX5 or AX15. AX5 transmissions matched the four-cylinder engine, while the AX15 was used with the six-cylinder engine. A four-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive package were both available as options. The transfer case for the derailleur was operated by a part-time NP207 Trac case command, with a 2.61:1 low-end ratio. A full-time, four-wheel-drive transfer case (called the Select Trac system) was offered as well. A Dana 30 front axle is used for the wheels and brake housing, while the rear axle is a strong Dana 35 C-clip-type axle.

In 1987, Jeep began offering more packages for the Cherokee, with each body type having certain features. The Cherokee Chief featured blacked-out lights exterior accents and hood graphics. The Cherokee Wagoneer featured a wood trim package and dual stacked headlights. The Pioneer package includes more high-end options such as interior trim, a full center console, rear window wiper and washer unit and additional gauges for vehicle monitoring. The Cherokee Laredo featured a different interior seating layout and several upgrade options.
